What Is Oud?
Oud, also called agarwood or agar, is a resinous heartwood that forms inside Aquilaria trees when they become infected with a specific mould. The tree responds by producing a dark, aromatic resin as a defence mechanism. This resin saturated wood is oud.
It is one of the rarest natural materials on earth. Wild agarwood producing trees now make up less than 2% of the Aquilaria population, which is why genuine oud oil can cost more than gold by weight.
Where Does Oud Come From?
The finest oud traditionally comes from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam for its sweet, fruity profile and from India and Bangladesh for a deeper, more animalic character. Middle Eastern oud from Oman and Saudi Arabia tends toward a smoky, leathery richness. Each origin has a distinct character, and perfumers choose based on the story they want to tell.
Why Is Oud So Popular in Pakistan?
Oud has been central to South Asian and Middle Eastern culture for centuries: burned as incense in homes, mosques, and at celebrations, applied as oil for spiritual and personal adornment. In Pakistani culture, oud carries connotations of prestige, spirituality, and warmth. It is familiar before it is even smelled.
